Virlo vs Apify

Apify is a general web-scraping platform: a marketplace of thousands of ready-made scrapers called actors, plus the proxies, schedulers and storage to run them on any site you like. Here is where each one is the better buy, feature by feature, and what they cost.

Apify
Free, then $19–$999/mo
Developers who need raw data from many different sites, who want to own and shape the pipeline, and who have the engineering time to keep a scraper working when a platform changes.
Virlo
From $0.01/call
Developers and AI engineers who want short-form video data as a managed API — pay per call, no plan to size, and no scraper of their own to keep working.

Is Virlo a good Apify alternative?

They are different kinds of tool, and at low volume Apify is the cheaper one. Apify is a general scraping platform: you rent actors and infrastructure, and the raw output and its upkeep are yours. For a one-off pull, a prototype, or data from sites Virlo does not cover, that is the right buy — the most used TikTok actor is billed per event, from $1.70 per 1,000 results. Virlo is a short-form video API: TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels come back in one schema, already scored for virality and outliers, and platform changes are absorbed on Virlo’s side. Choose Apify when you want control and breadth and have the engineering time to keep a scraper alive. Choose Virlo when the data feeds something customer-facing and you do not want to own a scraping pipeline.

Where each one wins

Apify

  • Scrapes almost any website, not only short-form video — one platform for every source you need
  • Thousands of ready-made actors, many open source, which you can fork and change
  • Cheap at small volume: the most used TikTok actor bills from $1.70 per 1,000 results
  • Proxy pools, scheduling, retries and dataset storage are part of the platform
  • Full control of the raw output, in JSON, CSV, Excel or HTML
  • Free plan with $5 of monthly usage, then $19/mo Starter — easy to try before committing

Virlo

  • Short-form video is the whole product, so TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels come back in one shape instead of three
  • Platform changes are absorbed on Virlo’s side — there is no actor of yours to patch when TikTok ships an update
  • Data arrives scored: virality, outliers and themes are computed, not left for you to derive from view counts
  • Endpoints that have no scrape equivalent — trends, sounds, hooks and research agents that run and report on a schedule
  • Failed requests cost nothing, and a credit balance never expires
  • Pay per call from $0.01, with no monthly plan to size in advance

When Apify is the right choice

Developers who need raw data from many different sites, who want to own and shape the pipeline, and who have the engineering time to keep a scraper working when a platform changes.

What it will not do for you

  • Marketplace actors are built by third-party developers, so the SLA and the fix time are theirs, not Apify’s
  • Raw fields only: no virality score, no outlier detection, no judgement about which video matters
  • A TikTok change can break an actor until its maintainer patches it, and the schema can move under you
  • Billing differs from actor to actor — per result, per compute unit, or both — so what a job costs is not obvious until you read each actor’s pricing tab
  • One actor per platform and per job: TikTok, Reels and Shorts arrive in three different shapes to reconcile
  • You own the pipeline — storage, de-duplication, back-fill and monitoring are all yours to build and keep running

FAQ

Is Virlo cheaper than Apify?

It depends on volume and on what you do with the data. The most used TikTok actor on Apify is billed per event, from $1.70 per 1,000 results, which bundles the platform usage into that price; it runs against a plan that starts at $19/mo. Other actors are billed per compute unit instead, at $0.13 to $0.2 per unit, so the cost model is not the same across the store. Virlo bills per call with no subscription, from $0.01 for raw data up to $0.50 for a research agent run. For a one-off pull of a few thousand videos, Apify is cheaper. The comparison changes once you count the engineering time to keep an actor working and to turn raw fields into something you can rank.

Can I use Apify for production short-form video data?

Many teams do. The risk is that marketplace actors are maintained by third-party developers, not by Apify, so when TikTok changes something the fix time is outside your control and the output shape can move under you. If a break in your data pipeline would reach a customer, a managed API moves that risk to the vendor. If the pipeline is internal and a gap of a few days is tolerable, an actor is fine.

Does Virlo scrape sites other than TikTok, YouTube and Instagram?

No. Virlo covers TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels only, and the API is read-only. Apify is the better tool if you need data from many different sites, or from a site no one has built an endpoint for. The two are not mutually exclusive — using Apify for the long tail and Virlo for short-form video is a reasonable split.

What does Virlo give me that a TikTok scraper does not?

A scraper returns the fields on a page: views, likes, shares, the caption. Virlo returns those too, and adds the judgement on top — a virality score that weighs views against the creator’s own following, outlier detection, the themes that are rising in a niche, the hooks the top videos open with, and research agents that run on a schedule and report what changed. Those are derived, not scraped, so there is no actor that produces them.

Do I pay for failed requests on Virlo?

No. Failed requests are not charged, and reading results back — agent results, saved lookups, tracking reads, status polling and webhooks — is free. On Apify it depends on the actor you picked: one billed per event charges for the results it produced, while one billed per compute unit charges for the time it ran, whether or not it returned anything. Check the actor’s pricing tab before you budget a job.

Can Virlo work with Claude or another AI agent?

Yes. Virlo runs an MCP server, so an agent can call short-form video data directly without a wrapper around a REST client. Apify also publishes an MCP server for its actors. The difference is what comes back: Virlo returns scored, cross-platform results, while an actor returns the raw scrape for your agent to interpret.

Try it on your own niche

The honest way to settle a comparison is to run both against the work you actually do. Virlo takes about 30 seconds to set up.

Pay per call from $0.01. No subscription, and the balance does not expire.
